I have a classroom full of eager learners. With the county-issued devices, the whole world is within their reach.
My students love to do research on a variety of topics or to explore other cultures and customs.
We use Google Earth to "visit" other countries, we use Prodigy to improve math skills, and we use many online resources to improve reading skills.
Since the onset of the pandemic, every student is issued an electronic device (laptop or tablet). Many of my students have difficulty maneuvering the touchpad on the county-issued devices. With state and county assessments being online, this becomes a huge problem.
Often students do not perform as well on these online assessments as they would with paper and pencil assessments.
It pains me that they are unable to demonstrate what they can actually do just because the touchpad is an issue. Frequently I have students shut down completely because of their frustration with the touchpad.
The headphones will allow students to utilize text-to-speech programs, listen to audiobooks, watch videos, and record themselves reading or practicing presentations. All of which are missed opportunities to increase reading fluency, improve comprehension, and demonstrate skills not related to reading (e.g. math computations or STEM projects).
