My Students

Have you been outside and enjoyed nature lately? Have you witnessed the circle of life as a hawk swoops down and catches a mouse? Imagine a struggling 6th grader who lives in a city environment and rarely gets exposed to nature trying to understand ecological relationships.

My students are at risk for failing, both in school and in life.

They are from a low socioeconomic background, come from broken homes, travel a great distance to come to a "choice" middle school in New York City and are below grade level in most, if not all content areas. They are young, eager 6th graders who want nothing more than to find academic success and break the cycle of failure. My students crave positive reinforcement and celebrate even the smallest accomplishment. They are typical 6th graders who want to learn by being active and doing. They deserve to experience a complete science laboratory experience with hand on activities.

My Project

These kits will allow nature to come alive for my city dwelling students. My students will be able to explore how energy moves through the ecosystem while analyzing the skeletal remains found in owl pellets. This analysis will lead to a greater understanding of the food chain and of how energy flows through an ecosystem. After class discussion, students will be challenged to analyze their own diets and create a food pyramid based on their results. Hands-on activities are an extremely valuable learning tool. Science is learned best by doing, touching, seeing and feeling. To actually see and dissect an owl pellet will lead to a much higher level of student interest, class discussion, and understanding.

This project will drastically improve my "bare bones" science classroom.

Instead of just reading about the food chain, my students will be able to experience it first hand which will lead to greater student understanding and academic success.
