I am a third year math teacher at Cobble Hill High School. I teach 9th grade math to 30 ninth graders and to 10th, 11th and 12th grade students. Needless to say, it is a challenge, especially for the older kids. If you have seen the 9th grade curriculum, there is a tremendous amount of graphing. Students learn or re-learn the basics of graphing in addition to the graphing of functions, inequalities, systems of equations and systems of inequalities. Asking students to watch while the teacher graphs is fine for some, however, many of our students learn better if they too can graph on their own. Small graph paper is fine, but large chart paper has a better feel for students. They can create large pictures of their learning and be proud of their accomplishments. Unfortunately, our school doesn't plan on buying this resource. With the graph paper, meter sticks and markers, my students will not only be able to have hands on learning each and every day of these lessons, but they will be able to present and display their work, which will hopefully get them to enjoy math again.
