My Students

My students are a diverse group of urban individuals that come from many different cultural, economic and social backgrounds. They represent many of the islands of the Caribbean and many nations of the Middle East. We are a Title I school in a low-income community; with a large Special Education and English learner population. The majority of my students read and possess math skills below grade level. Free breakfast and free lunch are available to every child in our building each day, which are now remotely served.

Because many of my students lack basic school supplies at home, they struggle with hands on projects.

As our school switches to remote learning, due to the recent pandemic, the effects of the lack of home school supplies became more apparent. Many of my students had no computer to access their assignments. Some had no WIFI at home and had to do all their assignments on their phone. Some had to share a single computer among their siblings missing valuable meet time with their teacher.

My Project

Please help me give my students the basic supplies they need for home and distance learning. Although the COVID-19 pandemic prove to be a challenge to both students and teachers this year, a lot of valuable information was learned. The computer can never replace a living/breathing teacher and not all learning can be done on a computer.

Students need to read, write, measure and create to learn, especially in Science.

Videos and simulations are great tools for learning, but using tools like a pencil, ruler, calculator and protractor not only allows a student to learn but also discover. As mentioned before, most of my students do not have access to technology and must rely on the “old fashion” way of doing things.

By providing each of my incoming students with supplies that they can take home, they will have an advantage that my previous students did not have.
