My Students

These students study the violin, viola, cello or bass as part of an inner city program for underprivileged, disadvantaged students in America's second largest school district. These orchestra students are talented and hard-working and grateful for the opportunities given. The students in 2nd through 5th grade choose an instrument from the school to rent for free or a minimal yearly fee, if they are able. They meet at school three days a week for instruction on their instrument and quickly advance as young musicians.

My Project

My orchestra students are from under-privileged families, many have never even seen a symphony perform. Under this residency, they will attend a performance with the Houston Symphony and receive 6 in-school coaching sessions with a professional violinist, working with them on their orchestra music.

The Symphony will also bring a quartet of musicians to our school for an intimate, hands-on performance experience to further enhance my young musicians on the cello, viola, bass, and violin.

It will expose them to the highest possible quality of music as they learn to play as "professionals."

These interactions with the Symphony musicians will be invaluable to my young inner-city musicians, who are playing in an orchestra, but who have never seen the high-level of beauty that a professional orchestra can produce.
