Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Hour of code approaches in December. This is an entire week dedicated to the importance of computer science. Students learn about the impact that technology has on the world around us. And they get to code things. The materials I am requesting in this project are needed to code Dash the robots. Last year, our school won a grant from the Toshiba Foundation for Wonder Workshop Robots. This year, my goal is to make more use of these amazing bots especially with hour of code! Additionally, I want students to program them. I also want to support what students are doing in their classrooms! What I mean by this is to have students practice math or science skills. For example, if students are learning about numbers or counting, they can program dash the robot to move up and down the number mat or I can create a math mat using the poster paper and markers (depending on the type of math they are doing in their regular classrooms). The possibilities are endless! This will make things more exciting for the kids.

Computational thinking is an important 21st century skill.

Hour of code is a great time to teach students about careers in computer science. Even if students may not be interesting in computer science careers, I want them to know that they are capable of coding. Coding is fun, interactive, and students problem solve. This is a great time to refine/enhance their current knowledge and skills. My kids LOVE using technology and they want to learn about different technologies available. This would be a great time for them to learn about robotics and coding. What better way to learn about coding than to do it YOURSELF!
