Please put the books that my students want to read IN THEIR HANDS! I am an 8th grade Language Arts teacher at Middle School 88 in Brooklyn. My school classifies as a "poverty" school, because over 90% of the students receive free lunch. Many of my students are working hard to becoming better readers and better students, but without books that interest them, I am fighting an uphill battle.

The irony of the situation, is that my school is within walking distance from a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Many of my kids walk past that bookstore three or four times a day - unable to purchase a book because they and their parents can't afford it. They are interested in the new releases. They are excited to read books that have recently been made into movies. They want these books - but my school cannot afford to order them - which leaves my students on the outside looking in.

What myself and my students need is an influx of some new books into our classroom library! These books will be available to my students not only this year, but in the years to come. With more "today," urban titles, my students will be reading books they can relate to on a personal level AND learn at the same time! The injection of these books into my library will spark a serious flame inside my students to read about topics and situations that are important to them. These books will make reading fun - AGAIN!

Your generosity and help will make it possible for students coming from low-income families to sink their teeth into the hot, new releases that they would otherwise never have a chance of holding. You can work magic - you can get a classroom of students excited, no, THRILLED about reading! This project is important to the growth of my students, and together with your assistance, WE can make a difference in the lives of my kids.
