Hot Stuff!

My students need infrared thermometers. The NGSS requires students to have access to scientific equipment that will help them understand, analyze, and interpret data they collect. Furthermore, better tech translates into students who are more engaged!

Help Mr. Engelman

My Students

If we are going to prepare our children for the 21st-century workforce we literally, and figuratively, need to get with the program. My students are a motivated group of fourth graders. They attend our community school in Southern California with a total population of about 600 kids.

Why are they changing math and science?

It can be frustrating for parents who want to help their kids with homework. Kids today are learning different methods than we did when we were kids. Isn't math just math?! Well, we need to prepare children for their futures, which will be very different than the world today. A different world requires a different approach to education. That is what I strive to provide to my students.

My Project

There is a significant shift in science education that is occurring in classrooms across the globe. The emphasis is shifting away from "cookbook" science activities. In the past students followed a prescribed set of instructions to understand a scientific premise.

In today's science classroom, students are generating hypotheses, collecting their own data, and analyzing data to understand scientific principles.

Infrared thermometers are used to measure infrared radiation, which people encounter every day. These tools can be used in a wide variety of experiments exploring the flow of energy through an ecosystem, the environmental impact of greenhouse gases, moisture retention in soil, and so many more! For students to be able to have these types of experiences, it is imperative they have access to tools that are more accurate and more sophisticated than the science classrooms of the past. For example in fourth grade, students are expected to, "Use a model to describe that animals receive different types of information through their senses, process the information in their brain, and respond to the information in different ways." They need access to more modern tools to ascertain the data they need.
