My Students

Due to the pandemic, many students have fallen behind especially in reading. My district has offered me a position as a Primary Promise Intervention/Prevention Literacy Teacher to work with students in grades K-3. There are two Primary Promise Teachers at my new school, so I have been working with first-grade students who are well below the benchmark in reading. There are 66 out of 98 first-grade students who are well below in reading, many of them who don't know any letters or sounds. These are students who basically didn't learn much last year in kindergarten during the pandemic.

My school is a Title I school, where almost all of our students qualify for the free lunch program.

Most are English Language Learners, speaking English as their second language. With my 17 years of teaching kindergarten and 8 years in second grade, I'm excited to be teaching these low students to become successful readers!

My Project

My students are just beginning to learn to read, and these Hot Dots reading materials have been very popular with my struggling readers. I only have one set of the PreK and the Kindergarten level and wish to have enough for a small group of 5 students. Students use the Power Pens and press the dots in each workbook. If the answer is correct, the pen lights up green with fun sounds. If their answer is incorrect, the pen lights up red with sounds to let the students know the answer is incorrect. There are rhyming words, beginning sounds, ending sounds, letter matching, missing letters, and more in each workbook.

These are essential skills to learn as young learners are beginning to read.
