Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our Maker Tech Lab is constantly filled with excited students ready to create and make, from first bell through lunch, to long after school gets out. The spark of invention burns most brightly when their ideas can take physical form quickly. I am constantly astonished by what these young engineers, given access to a space with precise tools, can envision and create.

Our hundreds of eager Makers form an incredible mix of backgrounds, with about sixty percent Latino and about the same from socioeconomically disadvantaged families.

Being in the middle of Marin county, there is a middle-class and affluent population as well, making for a truly diverse student body. Our young engineers bring a set of energy curiosities and concerns as diverse as their backgrounds, from worrying about their family's energy bill to wanting to know how the solar panels on their roof works. Students in the Maker Technology, Exploring Maker Technology and Maker Club programs are given the opportunity to build and create to address real-world problems; it makes their schoolwork relevant, real and not really feel at all like work.

My Project

Excited students in our Maker Club and Tinkerer's Workshops love making their creative ideas take physical shape. One high-interest design project students have always asked to do was to create custom t-shirts, both for the clubs as a whole and as individual avenues of self-expression. All we need to make this happen is a professional heat press and some heat-sensitive vinyl to cut!

We want to help our Maker Club students to build a community identity through having them design and create custom club t-shirts.

We offer a safe space for students in their middle school years to express themselves and explore making, technology, and engineering in a fun and supportive environment. We are hoping that in students creating a common group visual identity with individual re-mixed spins on a common theme, students will be able to feel more connected to their peers in the makerspace while still being able to express themselves in a unique way.

Students have asked for making their own t-shirts for years, and the only thing which has held us back was a lack of the proper equipment. Thank you for your support in making students feel more invested in their making community.
