My Students

Middle school years are a time of constant change. My students have a desire to become more independent and discover who they want to be.

Because many of my students come from hard places, growing up and self-discovery are sometimes a challenge.

They come in each day with a different set of emotional issues that, many times, stem from their home lives. Giving my students hope through strong characters in books empowers them, something many of them have never experienced.

My Project

Many of my students come from hard places such as poverty, abuse, homelessness, incarcerated parents, neglect, or divorce. When students see themselves in the books they are reading, they feel they are not alone. Reading about characters in books who persevere and overcome adversity gives students the courage to keep going and the hope that they can get through it.

The books in this project will be part of a unit on perseverance, a unit where they will come to realize yes, they may have difficult times, but with people who care about them and with hope, they can persevere.

I also have students who need to understand the hard places from which their friends and classmates are coming. Reading books about characters who may not be like them builds empathy so that they can understand and become a beacon of hope and a better friend.

Yes, hope is a beautiful gift.
