I teach at a small urban school in Indiana. My fourth grade students come from a close knit high-need community. I am responsible for teaching them in all of the core subjects.

My exuberant students love to explore new topics that they haven't been exposed to through their own life experience. As their teacher, I make every effort to give them real life connections to the curriculum. We have a new reading series that has a unit that explores pioneer life. The students showed particular interest in this unit. I would like them to do-si-do into the history of our country through this proposed project.

Swing your partner, do-si-doe, dancing through history is the way to go! As an extension to a field trip that we take to a living history museum, I'd like to provide my students with a healthy and fun way to connect to the reeling Hoosiers of the past. I plan to collaborate with our physical education teacher. We will need the music CD's for the students to use in learning the steps and calls. I would also like to use a book that connects to our reading text to introduce them to the topic of square dancing. As a culminating activity, we plan to invite parents to come to our fourth grade hoedown.

You can make it possible for my students to have a Hoosier hoedown, get some great exercise, and learn about the history of their state.
