My Students

Do you know what it feels like to be so excited about a project that you want to work on it all day long? That's how my students are when they get involved in something great.

I teach a wonderful, diverse group of kindergartners in an urban neighborhood.

They have learned to work cooperatively this year and do amazing inquiry-based project work. We have spent the last few weeks learning about Earth, which was spurred on by many questions the kids had, such as, "Why do earthquakes happen if they are so dangerous?" We are now learning about ways that we can help take care of the Earth and the kids are very excited about what they can do for our planet.

My Project

Our only roadblock is that we need more materials to be able to put our new learning into action. Our school has a compost bin that we are going to begin using, but it would be wonderful if we could have our own earthworm nursery right in the classroom where the kids could make observations and deepen their understanding of what earthworms really do. All of the learning that we do in kindergarten is centered around reading wonderful books about each topic, so along with the materials, like earthworm and plant nurseries, we need books to support the children' budding reading abilities and their new learning.

I know that if we receive these materials, our Earth project will expand into an even more interesting, fun, and far-reaching adventure.

My hope is that my six year olds will not only enjoy this project within the walls of my classroom, but will take their knowledge of Earth and a sense of responsibility for their planet with them as they grow.
