This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help inspire a lifelong love of reading and interest in United States history/government for students in a high need, low education community with unlimited potential! All students in this class are English language learners and greatly benefit as well from the visuals in this proposal.
All of the students in my class are English language learners, and few of them have any knowledge about American history. This is one of my favorite parts of the curriculum in 5th grade, so having these items will help students learn crucial facts in order to be strong future American citizens. We recently began our third theme in our Language Arts program which is all about the American Revolution. After launching the theme with an overview of the history leading up to the Revolution, students have been clamoring for more information. We also have the AR system, and all of these books are AR, so students can take tests on them after they are read in order to check comprehension. All 23 of my students are English Language Learners so the visuals really help deepen their understanding and bridge it to their current knowledge regardless of their language development level.
Many of my 5th grade students (after years of not reading on a regular basis) have become excited about reading, especially after learning about the American Revolution! We need the books in our classroom that they want to read! We also need the visuals which lower the affective filter of academic language and get them acquiring the language and content about this important subject! Though we will be learning the subject of social studies, literacy skills and growth will be the focus of instruction!
You will make it possible for my students to have background and deepen their understanding about American history and government. We focus greatly on citizenship in our classroom, and students are already making connections about that responsibility and civic duties. My hope is also that by reading (especially about others that have accomplished their goals, overcome obstacles, and pursued higher education) that they will be inspired to do the same! Your donation will directly impact these students and fuel their current (and hopefully lifelong) love for reading, learning, and American history/government!
