My Students

Students in grades one through five have physical education classes twice a week. During physical education, students are learning through games and station work. They truly enjoy coming to PE class.

During physical education, the students are learning fitness skills, how to take care of their bodies, and to work cooperatively with their classmates, while having fun.

My classes incorporate movement, music, fitness skills, and fun. Students feel comfortable to try all activities, even when the activities are difficult.

The students are eager to come to physical education. They are learning foundational skills that will help them throughout their lives.

My Project

I use hula hoops in many of my physical education lessons. Since about 500 students use them throughout the year, they become damaged and lose their shape. I would like the students to have new hula hoops to use this school year.

Hula hoops are tools for getting large motor skills active.

In addition to learning how to hula hoop, they are used in many games. One of my students' favorite games that hula hoops are used for is hula huts. The students in grades 3-5 are divided into groups, they work together to create huts, and then try to knock down the other teams' huts. I teach my younger students how to utilize the space in the gym. Each student gets a hula hoop and it becomes a car. They have to do specific skills while pretending to be a car and try not to collide into classmates. These are just two of the many lessons that utilize hula hoops.

My school participates in the Kids Heart Challenge, which is a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. During this challenge, students are encouraged to try different hula hoop challenges (ex. go from a standing position to a kneeling position while hula hooping).

Hula hoops play a vital role in my physical education classes.
