A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I teach middle school students in the Ewa Beach district. While everyone has gone through tough times during this pandemic, it is our students who have suffered the most. From being cut off from peers during the most crucial time of their life for social development, to having what little control they have taken from them with all the mandates that had to be put in place.
Through it all, our students have persevered and shown great resilience.
But the end is still nowhere in sight and this pandemic has opened their eyes to many other issues here in Hawaii. But I believe they have the ability to start the change we need, because my students have heart and loyalty. And I trust the future of our islands to them.
My Project
Ewa Makai eighth grade students will design and develop gardens with community stakeholder feedback. They will use the included garden tools to grow culturally relevant produce and problem solve along the way when they run into various challenges. Finally, they will encourage members in the community to practice sustainability and healthy eating by hosting informational seedling giveaways (using the sign holders to provide information about their plants and the buttons to promote sustainability in a way that can be worn by community members and spread awareness).
The objectives of the project are to: reintegrate students back into the school community and to offer a hands-on differentiated curriculum to address the individual needs and interests of each student.
