My Students

My students come from one of the busiest, most vibrant cities in the world; New York City! Our school is located in predominantly immigrant based community and many of our students families come from Caribbean countries. At our school students are awarded with Scholar Dollars for exceeding teacher expectations, growth, teamwork, assistance, academic achievement and so much more. With these scholar dollars students can purchase a wide variety of items, however none of those items are books...with your help I can encourage a real love of literature through independent reading.

Our Classroom Bookstore will allow students to buy and borrow books and series to get hooked on!

My Project

Throughout the year my students have access to only several class novels. However, we know that students reading independently greatly affects their success in school and on state exams. Students who read independently for at least 20 minutes a day tend to score in the 90th percentile on state exams. higher scores on state exams equal access to opportunities. The achievement gap is much more about an opportunities gap.

Many of my students are suffering under the misconception that they "are not good at reading" when in reality they just haven't found that book or series that creates that spark.

With a library dedicated just to building student interest we can create that spark of interest in literature.
