This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Yeats once said, "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." I want to light a fire and a passion for learning into my students and I need your help! My students get discouraged easily with traditional methods of teaching, so I need to hoodwink them into learning!

Our school is a Title 1 school which means that at least 40% of the students come from low income families.

I teach in a 4th grade Self-Contained classroom where all of my students have special needs. To add to their learning struggles, many of my students are ELL's (English Language Learners) and are performing significantly below grade level. All of my students struggle with reading and lack some of the most basic math skills, like understanding that a quarter represents $.25 or that four of them equal a dollar. They need to be taught and challenged to learn the skills that they need to succeed in the fourth grade and in life. My goal is to engage my students in their learning with activities and materials that will allow them to practice these skills in multiple learning modalities to facilitate comprehension. The activities will focus on building my student's functional and financial literacy to ensure that they are able to become productive and independent adults in the future.

My Project

With your help, I can tailor activities to their academic and interest level. The Scholastic News Weekly Reader has stories that are of high interest to my students and provides resources like the reading of text to students, as well as a translation feature that allows students that are still learning the language access text appropriate for their age group. This resource will not only build my students' reading level, it will provide us with articles that lend themselves to rich discussions. The math activity center and interactive math CD will allow me to set up centers that can help bridge their understanding of essential math skills like money, addition, subtraction, etc... and to help build their financial and math literacy. DynaMath will be another math resource used in class. My students often have to present their work to the class, the karaoke machine will allow my students to practice public speaking, which is an important life skill. The other materials will help organize our classroom.

Your donation will help me in "hoodwinking" my students into learning.

My special needs students struggle to feel successful with the curriculum and standards that they must be taught. It is essential for me to embed activities that are high interest, so that they have plenty of opportunities and exposure to the content being taught. My hope is that these activities will create greater engagement from my students, build up their functional and financial literacy, and light a fire for learning!
