Honors Students Love to Read Challenging Young Adult Novels

My students need 31 young adult novels written on a challenging level and an organizer caddy to be able to transport the books easily among the teachers teaching honors.

My Students

Do you remember what is was like to read the books you WANTED to read? Our honors students are constantly having books thrust at them and told "you must read this book." I want to give my students fun, yet challenging, books to read to encourage them to read more on their own.

Each year I teach a small number of honors students--students who read on or above the 9th grade level.

Because I also teach students who read on or below the 6th grade level, the majority of the books in my classroom library are high interest, low lexile books. They are not meant to be read by someone who is reading on grade level.

My Project

My honors students need to be challenged while reading books by authors they may recognize or books published within the past few years. Reading books intended for lower reading levels will not help prepare them for the rigor of college-level literature. By engaging their minds with novels they might find interesting, I hope to encourage them to pick up books on a more regular basis. The books I have chosen are all written on or above the 9th grade level. Two sets of trilogies are included in the list to encourage the students to continue reading once they have begun. I intend for my students to use these books with a double-entry journal reflecting on what they have read and applying what they have learned with the classics we use during the semester.

No matter how smart the student, every student needs to read.

So many of my honors students refuse to do so because the books in our library are not challenging to them. Providing them with the higher-lexile books will hopefully encourage them to pick up books more often.
