Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are all recent immigrants to the United States coming from over 30 different countries. Being English language learners, they build their academic English skills while continuing their academic studies. They balance multiple responsibilities including school work, sibling care, and working after school. In the midst of all of these tasks, many of my students are passionate about making their new society equitable and just for all who are here. In pursuit of learning for justice they read, debate, and collaborate to create projects that benefit both their peers and community outside of school. I am constantly inspired by them and impressed with their drive to overcome obstacles.

For this project we will read and analyze the book The Poet X by the Dominican-American writer, Elizabeth Acevedo.

As we read, students will explore the question: How do our intersecting IDENTITIES shape our perspectives and the way we experience the world?

After reading, students will survey other students at our school to learn about what kinds of discrimination based on identity they face. Based on the results of the survey they will create an interactive workshop for younger students in the school exploring gender, race, class, physical/mental ability, culture/religion, citizenship status, or other aspects of identity. They will work with their participants to create identity affirming messages using t-shirts, tote bags, photo booths, and chalk art to design messages of justice and pride. This project will help us celebrate and honor our intersecting identities and learn from each other to build community across the school.
