I teach at a rural, Title I school. Almost 100% of students receive free or reduced lunches. My student population includes, foster situations, parent or parents who are incarcerated, grandparents raising grandchildren, emotional needs, and those who learn differently.
I strive to not let their success be determined by their zip code.
I have students whose basic needs are met and those whose are not. Our school's meals are for those who need them, counseling, clothing, school supplies, and extra-curricular opportunities to try to reach all our families.
Many of my parents/guardians are unable to help their child at home. My students need extra time outside the classroom to build a strong learning foundation.
My Project
My students need time to process and create a solid foundation on mathematical processes. They learn best when it is in a fun game.
The parents of my students are many times unable to help homework.
This creates a huge obstacle. Students are expecting to learn and apply strategies with little help from home.
Allowing families to check out a game that will help my 4th grade student master abstract mathematical concepts. The onus with this endeavor is while parents interact with their to complete homework in disguise of a game, parents will also learn new mathematical processes.
Help me teach my students abstract mathematical concepts and parents along this enormous endeavor.
