Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember feeling like you had ants in your pants while you were at school. Maybe you just couldn't sit still. The desks and chairs are hard and uncomfortable, the floor isn't any better. I want to make my classroom a comfortable learning place. Beanbag chairs and floor pillows will help!

I teach a 2nd grade inclusion class in a public school.

The school services low income families and many special needs students. My classroom has typically developing students as well as students diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder. I also have many students who have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and have a very difficult time controlling their bodies. I work closely with the occupational therapists in my school to provide movement breaks for my students but they still struggle with being able to keep their focus on the lesson or task at hand. My hope is that if I am able to provide a more comfortable place for learning it will help all of my students remain focused so that the we can progress in our academics.

My Project

I have found some really fun and colorful beanbag chairs and floor pillows to create a comfortable and enticing environment in my classroom. The beanbag chairs are multi-colored and have a back. The chairs will be housed in the quiet corner. Students use this space when they need a break, are feeling distracted, angry and need to calm down/reflect, or just want a quiet place to read. This space is vital to our classroom and helps ensure that a kind, peaceful, and collaborative classroom community is fostered. The floor pillows are round colorful spots. I have asked for one per child. The students will be able to use these spots either at their desks to make their chairs more comfortable or on the rug. My hope is that these soft spots will help the students feel more comfortable and therefore help them remain focused for a longer period of time. Overall, my goal is to create a home away from home that will encourage learning while meeting my students individual needs.

Gone are the days when students sat in rows and blankly stared at the teacher as she lectured at them.

School is interactive, collaborative, engaging, fun, enjoyable and student directed. The classroom environment should have a warm, comfortable and functional feeling. The beanbags and floor pillows will help me achieve that atmosphere.
