My Students

My class is full of life and has a desire for learning. I have never met students with more personality or tenacity. This group has really changed my perspective on life in such a wonderful way. I have found joy in the little things because I have seen how they have joy in the little things despite some of their lifestyles. They are really a special group of students.

This group of children has really impressed upon my heart the need for family and a community that rallies behind them.

It has been so wonderful to see the support throughout the year, but it never seems like enough. I have seen children come to school with shoes three sizes too small because their parents can't afford new shoes. I have known children to go hungry over a weekend because their parents can barely afford to put food on the table. Also, while the school, including myself, has tried to meet the needs of these children, they are still in need of so much more!

My Project

With so much time at home during virtual learning, students have become accustomed to the comforts of their homes. I want to bring that comfort into my classroom as a way to welcome them back in a way that makes learning effective and fun. I also want to make sure that the classroom has supplies that help facilitate safe exchanges between students.

Students learn best in places they feel safe and comfortable.

It is my aim to create spaces in my room that allow for social distancing as well as social interaction. I plan to make a space in my room for station work with a new carpet, station table, and floor pillows. The mask lanyards and supply boxes, for example, will help students maintain their safety while in the classroom. I have also included some cheery items, like a rainbow led light and bright markers, to bring back the fun into learning.

I only hope that these materials can bring the comforts of home as well as some much-needed classroom materials to facilitate authentic learning during a year of transition.
