Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students range from Pre-K through 5th grade and they all have Individualized Education Programs. The majority of my students live in lower income housing, projects, or shelters in the south Bronx, NY. These students are energetic, charming, and sweet! Many of them need additional assistance in fine motor and visual motor skills, which are some of the underlying effectors of handwriting, and classroom tool manipulation (i.e., scissors, sharpener).

The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding of and engagement in authentic, meaningful activities.

It is my job to help these students to continue growing, developing and overall facilitating their success, particularly during this difficult time. With the help of DonorsChoose, it will be possible to bring these students the support they need now during remote learning and continue providing additional support once the schools reopen to return to the school safely.

My Project

The items inside the at-home learning kits (e.g., scissors, paper, glue, crayons, links, etc.) will help my students improve fine motor skills needed to support academic tasks (e.g., coloring, writing, cutting). Additionally, the tactile letters and numbers will help my students who have difficulty identifying and forming letters properly improve their pre-writing skills.

My students who are receiving remote instruction at home often do not have most of the supplies we need to support their learning.

Therefore, we have to improvise by using food items such as cheerios to count and paste on paper to form letters and numbers, as they use their index finger to trace them in preparation to practice writing. Paper clips and plain paper have been used to create fine motor games due to lack of adequate tools at home. These are just a few examples of some of the different things we have done to bring some hands-on opportunities using wherever they have available at home, which in most cases is very little.
