My Students

My school serves a diverse population of students from varying economic backgrounds. They all have one thing in common...they seek my office as a safe haven.

My students are growing and learning to navigate this world together despite their different backgrounds.

My students seek my room as a safe place to cry, laugh, hug and turn their mood around. My students tell me all the time they would love more comfortable furniture so they can relax and de-stress when they are feeling anxious or angry. My students are working so hard to develop the social and emotional skills that they need to be functioning members of our school community and eventually society. Some of my students are in need of a little extra help to develop those skills. I want to create a space that will aid them develop these much needed social and emotional skills.

My Project

My office is a place where kids go to get away and de-stress. In order for counseling to work you need to work not only with someone you feel comfortable with but also be in a space that makes you feel comfortable. A calm, inviting, Zen-like atmosphere is what I wish for my students who visit my office. I want them to feel like they are home. Having a couch and a table for them to feel like they are coming into a living room will immediately help to de-escalate a child's anxiety and level of frustration. The rocking chairs are for my students that need to feel motion in order to relax. The stools will help to add seating for more children to come in and be part of a group like atmosphere as we sit around the table.

My students are just like many students, navigating the school setting, working out problems and building their characters as they grow up.

They need to know how to navigate so many situations, find their own voices and to understand who they are. Many of my students spend their day in crisis dealing with such things as loss of a family member, serious illness, child abuse, divorce, self-esteem, eating disorders, self-harming behaviors, and bullying. They come to school knowing it is a safe place and I am one of their safe adults to help them process all that is going on. To be able to see my students leave with a smile and know someone cares and values their thoughts and feelings is my goal every day.
