My Students

My love of gardening began as a young child. My parents gave me my very own plot of land and told me I could grow anything I wanted. I was hooked.

My students are passionate fourth and fifth graders in a self-contained highly capable program.

I teach the math/science part of the curriculum to both groups. Recently I began dividing my plants at home and bringing the extras to school for the students. I told the kids that they could take them home and start their own little garden. I was surprised at the response. It was like I was passing out candy bars; everyone wanted one! It was then that I realized that I needed to add a gardening unit to my science curriculum.

My Project

First, students will complete research on different kinds of seeds and what conditions are needed for germination. As a class we will decide which seed to germinate first using the germination rate and the last frost date for our area. I have requested ten All-In-One Greenhouses so each class can plant the same type of seed in each greenhouse container. The labels will be used to identify students' individual plants. We will conduct scientific experiments using the grow mats to determine if the heat increases germination rate. As the plants outgrow their peat pots, students will transplant them to reused containers and slowly acclimate them to being outside by using the portable greenhouses. Finally, each child will take his or her plants home and care for them over the summer in their own garden. In the fall, we will not only discuss the results, but I will teach them how to collect the seeds from their garden for planting in the spring.

With your help, my students will be able to start their own garden at home and experience the joy of nurturing a seed into something to eat or something beautiful to enjoy.

I will be adding this to my other environmental projects funded by Disney Planet Challenge. It fits my strong curriculum message about taking care of our Earth.
