My Students

In the city of Newark, many students live below the poverty line. Some cannot even wear clean clothes to school and are targets for bullies. Some students are teased and chastised because they were showing up to school looking unkempt. Some of these students were becoming chronic absentees—missing three to five days of school per month—out of shame. We are a Title I school.

At this time in the school year, students are back under the strict in-school protocol, and they need to be compliant with the uniform policy to stay in school.

We still engage them with other models within the classroom and with multiple social media platforms such as Zoom, Webex, Google Docs, and Google Meetings.

I am able to connect with my students in spite of their virtual or chronic attendance. Many of my students are members of the senior class. I am involved with them beyond the classroom by engaging them in positive social change, community service activities, and extracurricular activities. I want them to learn the importance of serving their community.

My Project

Some New Jersey schools are scrambling to keep their kitchens stocked with nutritious food that children will eat due to nationwide supply chain snags and labor shortages.

The challenges have forced some schools to pare down their lunch menus or find substitutes for hard-to-stock items.

Daily our students are forced with the choice of eating school lunch or not eating. A lot of students at our school don’t eat lunch because school meals are not good, I noticed fewer lunch options this fall than in the past. Many times are so bad students just don’t eat all day. They say, "I will just wait until I go home."

Therefore, this project Home Cooked will help solve the problem by purchasing two microwaves so that students can bring in Home Cooked meals to be warmed up during their lunch period.
