I teach Math and Science to Special Education Middle school students at the Ronald Edmonds Learning Center in Brooklyn, NY. Seventy-four percent of our student body receives free or reduced priced lunch. Who wants to be in the hospital during any holiday season? This is a question I give to my students. Of course the answer is "No one!". But then what could make someone in the hospital feel a little bit better? It is in this vein that my 10 students make gifts for children who are hospitalized in Brooklyn Hospital during the Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa season. This project brings together skills, creativity, emotions and work ethics that can last a lifetime for my students. And it brings happiness to the patients. The gifts that will be made in class include knick-knack boxes made out of craft sticks and decorated with glitter, sun-catchers, tie-dyed t-shirts and paint-decorated canvas bags. Nothing can measure the amount of pride, skills learned or reinforced, sharing and willingness to assist someone else who is having a difficult time. Nothing can measure the happiness, warmth and light in the eyes and smiles of my students when they are presenting the gifts. Instead of asking and getting, they are making and giving-giving things made with their own hands and creativity. My students are classified as mentally retarded so this hands-on, tactile and concrete project helps them to understand the importance of giving. It introduces them to or reminds them how to use art-centered materials. For this project they will need approximately 500 craft sticks, all purpose glue, 15 small canvas tote bags, glitter glue, 2 suncatcher paint kits and 12 tins/packs of clothing dye. They each will bring in 2 t-shirts for tie dyeing- one to keep and one to give away. This also brings a sense of pride and satisfaction to wear something they've made.
