My Students

“Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work in hand. The sun's rays do not burn until brought to a focus" -Alexander Graham Bell. We live in a world of distractions, and focus is a crucial life skill that I want to instill in my students. I believe in giving them the tools to be successful.

We have nineteen hard-working girls in our fourth grade classroom with a range of ability levels and backgrounds.

Our elementary school is located in a small town in South Carolina. I have noticed that many of my students get distracted by what others might think and become more hesitant to engage in their own learning. In a Psychology Today article, "The Trouble with Bright Girls," Heidi Halvorson, PHD. states that, "Bright girls were much quicker to doubt their ability, to lose confidence, and to become less effective learners..." than boys of the same age and ability. If girls think that the way that they learn is "different" then it must be wrong, and they are unable to focus in the classroom. I want to teach my students how to focus effectively in collaborative groups as well as independent work.

My Project

I want to inspire my girls to grow their minds and confidence through materials to help maintain their focus in a variety of learning settings! My students need privacy partitions and wobble stools. Privacy partitions will be used to help my students focus during independent work without distraction. The wobble stools will be used for my students who need to be moving around to be engaged and focused. Wobble stools can be used during whole group lessons, small group teaching, guided reading, math stations, and independent working time. With these materials, my students will learn how to focus on the task at hand. They can focus in the ways that they learn best without being too distracted by what they perceive that others think, or bottled up energy. They will not be embarrassed by the different ways to help them learn. It is my passion to give my students the skills and the tools that they need for the future when they step out of my classroom!

These donations will enhance my students' love of learning and encourage them to confidently focus on their tasks in the classroom and beyond.

The girls will learn valuable life lessons through these materials. When my students are able to focus, they can be excited and engaged in their learning! This ability to focus on the task at hand and persevere will help each of the nineteen students in my class to become mighty girls for the rest of their lives!
