My Students

A day in the life of a first grader at our school, includes silliness, curious questions, writing stories, practicing using our manners, brilliant ideas, dance parties, listening to our favorite authors and hard work. They enjoy spending time outside, learning through play and fostering friendships that will carry them through their educational career at our K-8 school. Hands-on learning and integrating technology into their skill building and projects excites them as learners.

Our energetic group of students enjoys learning using hands on, whole group methods.

They are movers and shakers and enjoy a variety of work areas, tools, dividers, seating choices and movable work surfaces. These tools help increase their focus, provides them with movement as they work and helps them feel accomplished and successful.

My Project

Our first graders need phonics games for our literacy work stations. We need an Osmo to use in our iPad station for students to practice letter identification, letter sounds, sight words and CVC words. First grade students need games that practice short vowel sounds, long vowel sounds, blends and digraphs. Each day our first graders rotate through guided reading groups and literacy work stations. In guided reading they practice books that are at each students reading level. While I am teaching and reading with my guided reading group, the rest of our class is working on building literacy skills in stations. We have a variety of stations including iPad, buddy reading, game, word work and poetry station.

Practicing letter sounds, vowel sounds, blends and digraphs builds a strong foundation of phonics for all of our readers.

The set-up of our literacy time provides students the time to work on activities that reinforce the skills we have taught in our CAFE (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expanding Vocabulary) lessons and from the instruction in guided reading groups. By building a foundation with strong phonics skills we are providing students with the tools they need to read books that inspire and excite them.
