My Students

Our elementary school is a diverse school in an urban community that serves students from many backgrounds. Each child brings with them unique strengths and needs. They are inquisitive and enthusiastic, and come to school ready to learn every day!

One of the biggest needs for my students right now is the chance to engage with and devour a wide range of books.

Many of my students are English language learners, and my class ranges widely in reading strengths and needs. However, they are all eager to learn and to enjoy a great book!

My Project

My students, like many intermediate students, LOVE graphic novels. They are visually appealing, provide great picture support for vocabulary development, and are highly engaging. As a teacher, I strive to provide my students with biographies that span a range of time periods and areas of influence.

The Show Me History series of books will provide my young learners with interesting biographies of important figures like Alexander Hamilton, Anne Frank, and Gandhi.

These books provide extensive background information about these important historical figures. The graphic novel format appeals to a wide range of students, including those who are reluctant readers or who tend to shy away from nonfiction.
