History Through Media - Video Game Style!

Help me give my students 5 Nintendo Switches to participate in our ESports league and further their knowledge of history through historically themed games.

My Project

At my school I have been teaching history through media for some time now, however, students are beginning to slip away from the medium of movies, and it is sometimes hard to get them to watch a 2–3-hour movie in class.

Video games are a medium that students are drawn to, and with a plethora of great historically based titles available they give me the opportunity to teach about those time eras, have discussions about historically accuracies/inaccuracies while allowing the students to be fully engaged with the choices they make playing the games.

In this course, I will teach students about the history of the video game industry, show the evolution of games and also spend time learning about different eras of history. Then, with these Switches requested, they will be able to play games like Assassins Creed and Red Dead Redemption to immerse themselves in those time periods. This curriculum will be taught to high schoolers and has been offered in High Schools around the U.S.A. and in college as well!

As a culminating project for this course, students will make their own historical RPG games, so these Nintendo Switches will allow students to experience this genre of games as a model of what makes a great RPG!
