My Students
My students are from a small town and a small school system. They range from eighth grade to seniors in high school. The majority of my students have grown up together and are very close. They spend their spare time working with their family on ranches or in a local gas station.
They are very active in their school through sports, BPA, and National Honors Society.
They also help with sporting events. Many of the students are looking at going to college in the future. They want to succeed in school.
My Project
In the Language Arts classroom, there is focus on grammar, essay structures, and literary elements. There is also focus on literature itself and how the students can learn from the literature. When presenting literature to the students I try and make it relevant to what we are learning as well as relevant to the time period it is portraying or talking about.
The Junior class works their way through American Literature.
We start with Native American texts and move through to the Great Gatsby. I would like to provide the students with a more relevant book to the times of slavery by reading the Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglas. This will give them a larger understanding of the time and it is a non-fiction text from the perspective of a slave. I feel that this will impact them and will understand the time period more effectively.
The Grammar books will help prepare the students to become effective writers and speakers.
