My Project

Our students have been studying the history of writing systems from ancient cuneiform wedges to Gutenberg's printing press. We'd like the opportunity to practice writing in some of these different mediums.

How people communicate has an impact on the ideas they wish to spread.

For my sixth graders, this project is a great way for my students to use the information they have learned about Mesopotamian cuneiform and hieroglyphics to compare to the development of carved characters that allow for repeated printing of the same words or messages. For my seventh graders, this helps reinforce the impact of printing. They learn about printing methods developed in China and the impact of Gutenberg's printing books in Medieval Europe. As they get their hands on the tools that create letters in linoleum and create something for themselves, they start to recognize the planning involved. Printing spreads ideas, but to do so, characters need to be created in a way that can be repeatedly printed to reach the widest audience. This project is for a Blick Blue Easy-To-Cut Class Pack, extra linoleum, and cardstock to print it on.
