Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever had to wonder where your next meal will come from? Or where you will lay your head to sleep at night? These are just some of the challenges facing some of my students, yet they continue to come to my class to try to learn about history.

The students I work with come from varying backgrounds.

Most come from immigrant families, some are immigrants themselves, and many live in poverty. They attempt to change their situations, however, by attending class and making a sincere effort to learn. I admire many of my students. I am not sure how much I effort I would put forth if I had to worry about things like hunger and/or homelessness. Yet these kids stand up to the challenges they have been handed in their young lives. They don't all succeed, but those who do truly are what inspiration means to me.

My Project

It may sound simple, but some of these kids have never been taught organization skills. The ones who have the skills, on the other hand, face the challenge of not having the supplies and not being able to afford them. I believe something as simple as your donations of the supplies I have requested will help me to model organizational behaviors that they will need should they choose to continue on to higher education.

I want to prepare my students for success.

I think that is my primary job as a teacher. I find it tragic that so many of them have made it this far without ever having been taught how to be scholarly. It also breaks my heart to see that those who do possess the skills needed for success cannot afford to buy the materials needed to be organized. For this reason, I have taken on the challenge helping them get organized and stay on track to a brighter future.
