Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My lively 6th grade students this year are barrels of fun! They love to read, they are enthusiastic about math, they enjoy discussing new ideas with each other, and most importantly: (even in middle school) they are excited about learning!

Our small K-8 school has one class per grade, with two additional 7th grade special education classes.

We are a tight-knit bunch, since most of my students have been together since kindergarten. And although our school is located in a small corner of the Bronx, we make the best of being a part of such a wonderful city, where we can make every cultural institution available an extension of our classroom!

My Project

My students love to learn and read -- but biographies for kids tend to feel a little... boring. However, the "Who Was/Is...?" series presents information about various historical figures in such a fun-filled way! It really makes these men and women leap out of the page so that students want to keep on reading, they want to know more, they want to be inspired by these amazing people who lived long ago.. or better yet, those who are still around to keep accomplishing amazing feats!

Representation matters!

I would love for my students to have access to a vast array of biographies that will help them find someone they can relate to... a person just like them, who has made a huge difference in the world. I want my students to know, they too can make a difference!
