Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students in fourth grade should be reading to learn, but my students are behind. Can you imagine a textbook for your grade level being completely incomprehensible? Due to their non-English language backgrounds, students in my class read primarily on kindergarten through third grade levels.

My EL scholars aspire to be learners in every subject, but their low literacy holds them back.

By practicing reading comprehension through historical fiction, my students can develop their curiosity while gaining the most important skill: reading. My fourth grade scholars will change the world. They will attend college and become immigration lawyers, fashion designers, soccer players, and doctors. They realize how their families work to raise them in the U.S. In TN, we have a diversity of cultures. My class includes English Learners from Mexico, Iraq, and Egypt. Twenty four out of my twenty five scholars are on free and reduced lunch. Our school is Title I and our classroom resides outside in a portable. My students are often exposed to violence. However, their economic status will not determine their futures. Together, they voted for our class motto to be "Make our Way to College." Truly, this is their daily mission.

My Project

I am requesting class sets of two novels: The Fighting Ground and Dear Levi. Both of these titles are recommended by Columbia University's Teacher College and will challenge my students. This will be our daily book for shared reading. In small groups, my students will read these books to practice their reading fluency, develop their vocabulary, and push their ability to discuss literature. Together, we will engage in meaningful conversations, driven by citing evidence from the text. The Fighting Ground, by Avi, will teach my students about the Revolutionary War, while Dear Levi will teach them about Westward Expansion.

These two resources will be shared by the rest of my teaching team. Your contribution will impact over 150 students. Our students will hone their critical thinking skills and perhaps most importantly gain significant exposure to quality novels.
