My students need a library of historical fiction such as Sign of the Beaver,, Mr. Revere and I, and Mystery of the Roman Ransom to supplement the classroom textbooks and primary source documents used to explore history.

My Students

McLuhan wrote, "Anyone who tries to make a distinction between education and entertainment doesn't know the first thing about either." In my room at my school, we have a rigorous, rambunctious, and at times, ransacked social studies classroom!

The Bensonhurst neighborhood has students of a wide variety of learning styles, cultural origins, and religions, but what they all share is zany, passionate teachers who tune into students.

Our students represent locales as far from our school as Uzbekistan, Ecuador, and China, to nearby Sheepshead Bay and Coney Island!

My Project

We are building a Historical Fiction classroom library so students may participate in Historical Fiction Literature circles. It is a cross curricular goal that will challenge our students to apply their non-fiction reading skills to fictional accounts of American and Global history. Literature circles are sort of like a book club. Students will get historical fiction novels to read and discuss with their peers. All I will provide is the texts and the opportunities.

Technology has been a wonderful gift to our school, but it has shouldered the traditional library.

Offering students historical fiction texts in a variety of reading levels will present an opportunity to read great novels that supplement their social studies curriculum!
