The 2018-19 school year will be my fourth year of teaching and first year teaching high school history. I am so excited to begin this new chapter in my career and to continue to serve my students. The majority of my students come from traditionally underserved communities, and the work I do directly helps to reduce the achievement gap between students of color and students of privilege.
Due to the inequitable distribution of funding between schools in traditionally underserved communities and communities of privilege, the burden of buying basic classroom supplies often falls on school staff and teachers.
The funds raised through this project will directly support my school and its students.
My Project
When you were in high school, you probably began the year with a fully-equipped Social Studies classroom. As the year went on, when the pencil sharpener broke or the stapler jammed, your teacher likely was able to replace it within a few days. This is not always the case in under-funded city and charter schools.
My students need a full classroom's worth of supplies, and unfortunately, neither my school nor I have the budget to fulfill this need.
I have requested: speakers to show engaging videos; tissues for runny noses; loose leaf paper for awesome essays; chart paper and markers to make concepts stick and make our room look awesome; a clock to know how much learning time is left; flair pens and Post-its to make feedback pop; personal whiteboards to hold students accountable for their knowledge; caddies to organize these whiteboards; band-aids for hard-earned paper cuts; and a hole punch to keep our notes nice and organized.
