My Students

Shhhhh, we're testing! It's no secret that standardized tests play a large role in modern education. These tests hang over our heads and are a constant reminder of how these high stakes tests determine the future of every student and teacher in the system.

My students are predominantly African-American and Latino, and they come from some of the most violent and impoverished neighborhoods in our state.

As learners and thinkers, my students possess a remarkable capacity for creative expression. However, when navigating print texts or utilizing written prose as a medium of expression, their reach often exceeds their grasp.

My Project

As teachers, we will try anything to help our students gain an advantage on the many tests they will have to take. As an English teacher, I try to select books that will not only help them to become better readers and writers, but will also help them to learn more content for their state-wide Global History exam. I then use these books to create book clubs, so I can accommodate the different types of readers and learners in my room. The bedrock of my literacy program is these book clubs. With book clubs, I have seen much higher levels of student engagement and accountability around reading. However, a key element of book clubs is providing texts that are both challenging and engaging. I am certain that "Deogratias, A Tale of Rwanda" will be invaluable as an instrument to build student engagement and help my students take their literacy skills to the next level.

The literacy skills of many students are in peril because they have not had pleasurable or meaningful reading experiences.

I believe that these book clubs will help many students to have a meaningful and pleasurable experience with reading. These books will give students a chance to think critically about the world they live in and constructively about the world they will eventually create.
