Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a public Kindergarten through eighth-grade school in a high-poverty, urban community in New Jersey. They love music class and are great musicians. Even though we don't have a budget for new materials, we find creative ways to make music together, even during this time of remote learning.
It can be challenging to keep middle school students engaged in music remotely but I know they would be excited to have a teaching artist from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center lead them in a virtual Hip Hop Arts and Culture residency.
My Project
My students have been so resilient throughout their remote learning experience but predictably, it gets harder to keep them focused as time goes on. The addition of a new teaching artist specializing in Hip Hop would certainly invigorate our weekly music classes.
If we received this virtual residency, my middle school students would explore the roots of an American art form that has inspired generations of young people and transformed the landscape of numerous global cultures.
This affirming art-making experience allows students to discover themselves, reimagine their world and amplify their voices using classic Hip Hop practices and fundamental techniques.
