This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students truly enjoy reading comic books and graphic novels! We have independent reading time every day, and I want nothing more than to see them reach for books that they can connect with on a personal level. While there is a variety of books in our classroom library, we are in need of multiple copies of our favorite books so that every single student can enjoy reading it at their leisure.

It makes me so happy to see they're drawn to my few copies of The Graphic History of Hip Hop, finding connections to the artists, the songs, the pop culture references, as well as the artwork!

And the best part is how interested they are in learning about the history of their favorite music genre, while understanding the deep connection it has to our community, self-expression, and hip hop's impact on a global scale. It has encouraged my students to not just read, but write to express their own ideas, and see how history is all around us. I love it when learning comes alive and becomes personally meaningful to my students. I know they would greatly appreciate having their own copies of this amazingly illustrated book!
