Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our old carpet is tattered, torn and appears soiled even after having cleaned it multiple times. It needs to be replaced so that we can learn so many important skills through floor play.

I have a small class of very young learners.

The students have a wide variety of interests. Many students enjoy looking at books and are even starting to decode words. While others are more into cause-effect and sensory play. Although they are all very unique they also have a great deal in common. For example, they all love playing on the floor. The students are bright, happy and extremely energetic. So energetic in fact, that they are causing our old carpet to fray!:)

My Project

The students in my classroom enjoy many activities such as circle time, art and especially centers. During center time, students are able to explore the classroom and most or all of the students often choose to play on the floor near their peers. During floor play they may play with toy cars, stack blocks or read books. No matter what they choose to play with, floor play is integral to an early learner's growth because it provides language and socialization opportunities that is unlike other parts of the day. Students are right next to each other and this helps to increase material and word exchanges. This first occurs with teacher direction but as the year progresses many students will be able to do this with increasing independence. Not only are the students playing side-by-side, but this is the one part of the day that I am truly at the student's level. This is important in building a trusting and caring relationship with all the children.

Floor play is so important for early learners and the skills they learn playing side-by-side they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Skills such as sharing, pretend play or working together to create a structure form blocks.
