Help Mrs. A.

How did you learn to be proactive, set (and reach) goals, prioritize, have a positive attitude, listen, work in groups and renew yourself regularly? These are life skills that my sixth graders need, and I want to empower them by providing a rich forum for my students to develop these skills for success at the beginning of their middle school experience. I am entering my second year teaching sixth grade math, science and history in South Los Angeles. The student population that our school serves is predominantly low-income, Latino (82%) or African American (17%), and performing below grade level. Last year less than 15% of our students performed on grade level or above on the California Standards Test.

I know that my students can and want to be successful, though they are often unsure of their own abilities and what they need to do in order to be successful. I want my students to leave my classroom with a solid understanding and appreciation for science, math and history, though I also want to make sure that my students are developing life skills that with help them take on their future endeavors. There is not a lot of encouragement to go beyond the required textbooks these days, but I know that this type of education is equally important to my students, who are growing up in a very challenging area and who we need as future leaders in our communities.

I would like to expose my students to a valuable character-building curriculum that could supplement our state standards and help them develop their own plans for the future (including the skills that will serve as a road map for how to get there). Sean Covey's 7 Habits for Highly Effective teens focus on being proactive, beginning with the end in mind (goal-setting), putting first things first (prioritizing), thinking win-win (having a positive attitude), seeking first to understand and then to be understood (listening sincerely), synergizing (working together to achieve more), and sharpening the saw (renewing yourself regularly).

I would really like to get a class set of books and a class set of student workbooks to use with my advisory students on a daily basis throughout the upcoming school year. I would also like to get a copy of the book on cd, so that we can listen to some of the sections to supplement the fantastic skill-building activities. I believe that this provides an engaging and meaningful context for helping students think critically about both who they are becoming and whether or not they are on the path that they want to be. I am so excited to think about working with my students to start developing these fantastic habits and I hope that you will consider joining us on this incredibly important journey!
