This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students are a very diverse and unique group, who come from low-income households. Regardless of their socio-economic status, many of our students strive for excellence and take pride in their learning.
Our students continually make an effort to improve, grow, achieve, and succeed, inside and outside the classroom and school.
Teachers are committed to honing our students' skills and providing them with resources that will keep them highly engaged.
My Project
Our kindergarten friends tend to choose books with characters they identify with. That is the purpose of this project. My whole team is excited about growing our classroom libraries and further diversifying them with materials that shows the black experience in a positive light.
We need more realistic and non-fiction books with African American main characters, who have positive interactions and experiences throughout.
Books that teach black children to love and embrace themselves and be proud of who they were made to be.
As a school, we are celebrating Black History Month with the theme, Higher Education is a Realistic Opportunity: HBCU's, the educational hero of the African American community. HBCUs are a source of accomplishment and great pride for the African American community as well as the entire nation. It my hope students will see that pride through the power of literacy and the rich experiences that are already inside of them. Each kindergarten teacher will receive one copy of each book to place in their classroom libraries. I have also included some chapter books to share with a group of 4th graders (I was their 2nd grade teacher), who come to me often for book recommendations that are relatable to their lives and personal experiences.
We are excited for sure about this project and can't wait for our kiddos to get their hands on them. Thank you in advance for your consideration and generosity.
