Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All of our students are recent immigrants from over 20 countries who have been in the country for less than 4 years. My students are some of the hardest working, bravest, and most resilient people that I know. In addition to dealing with the regular stress of being teenagers, my students have to adapt to a new culture, environment, and learn English all within four to five years to graduate. For many, college is their goal. For some, just graduating high school is a struggle because of low literacy skills, deep social-emotional challenges, or financial obligations to their family. However despite the inherent cultural, social, and economic obstacles, we have an above average graduation rate. Many of our students come in angry, lost, scared, confused, and alone, but leave determined, confident, and poised to succeed. We are always striving to increase those numbers through love, equity, and high expectations!

My Project

In education, simultaneously integrating reading with writing, also known as annotating, is an invaluable skill that all students need in order to suspend their tendency to blindly accept information as fact, so that they may analyze and evaluate text to derive their own conclusions.

To this end, mastery of content comes after cultivation of critical thinking and at the root of it all is reading comprehension. Traditionally, reading has been taught as a passive activity, but having students actively engage with a text through a critical eye via summarizing main ideas, constructing opinions, making connections, etc, will greatly deepen their reading comprehension. In addition, through annotating, students create a personal and meaningful reading experience that will further engage them as thinkers to expand and deepen their understanding about their world. Moreover, I have found that very few students come to school knowing how to annotate beyond translating, underlining, and highlighting, which most do without reason or purpose.

This is why having a 6-in-1 color pen for annotating will help provide a clear, easy, and structured annotating system. Research has shown that we learn faster and remember better using colors. With these special annotating tools, my students will practice and develop annotating skills as each color will represent a discrete skill, i.e., summarizing in red, opinions in blue, questions in green, etc. Students will devise their own annotation system that they will be able to internalize and take with them from class to class and beyond high school.

Dr. Seuss stressed the importance of reading to access real and imaginary worlds and Edward Bulwer-Lytton, said the pen is mightier than the sword. These pens perfectly capture both sentiments.
