Higher Level Readers Need Higher Leveled Books!

My students need a variety of new and classic books such as "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" to listen to and read on their own so that they may enjoy the reading life. I need books for my higher readers.

My Students

What was your favorite book that your teacher read to you? Mine was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Some of my students have broken the code and are reading chapter books. Others need to read Dr. Seuss. They need to read some of the classics. I want them to say, "The book was better!"

Most of my students' families are economically challenged and do not have books at home or can not read themselves.

Therefore, my students are not being read to at home. I feel it is the school's responsibility to provide our students with this exposure. My students love hearing me read stories and I love reading to them. However, I find myself wishing I had some of the books I am requesting to read to them. Most of the books I read to them, they try to read on their own. What a great feeling this is for me!

My Project

My students will develop a love of reading, and maybe some will become a member of their local library, check out a book I read to them, and read it to their parents. The books I have requested more than one copy I can start a book club with my higher level readers. The Mem Fox books I am requesting will provide me with the opportunity to compare her books in what is called an 'author study'. Maybe my students will be able to tell their parents about Mem Fox and the books she writes, and what they all have in common. Dr. Seuss books will be wonderful for my struggling readers.

This project is so important because if you can read, you can do ANYTHING!

I want my students to believe they can be like the authors of books they read. I want them to have a better life for themselves.
