My Project

While students interact with photographic processes on their phones and personal technology, having access to a professional-grade camera can be a transformative experience that supports students' feelings of agency, autonomy, and connection to their communities and environments.

Our goals are for students to engage with digital photography as a way to explore identity and community and as a gateway to supporting our students' mental health.

Working with a professional-grade camera is not only an opportunity for students to learn about the processes and technologies that contribute to the art of photography but also allows students to engage with their world in a new way. This can be a powerful experience for kids, especially those who may struggle with mental health challenges or other feelings of disenfranchisement. Authoring a unique perspective of one’s environment can be transformative and can be a catalyst for feelings of hope and growth.

Our student body is incredibly diverse, with many languages being spoken, many cultures represented, and many learning styles demonstrated. Our students are also from a variety of different socioeconomic backgrounds and live in vastly different parts of our city. Many of our students have learning disabilities, but also demonstrate their strengths in unique and powerful ways. Our students are special because of their acceptance and support of one another and their eagerness to collaborate. However, as a Title I public school, many of our students do have financial challenges, and we try to offer them as many experiences as possible that will benefit their learning and their mental health.
