Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend an urban high school. It is the most diverse high school in the state. My 9th and 10th grade reading students are not reading on grade level. They are in a year long reading class in order to increase their reading level. Most of my students come from literacy poor homes as well.

My students do not have easy access to quality literature.

They need access to high interest independent reading books. Most of my students come from homes with no books. They also avoid using the library because of the fear of losing books and having to pay to replace them or pay overdue fines. In my classroom, it is my goal to have enough books for all of my students.

My Project

My 9th and 10th grade reading students have not had many opportunities to see themselves are readers nor do they have a positive association with reading. These students are 3 or more years below grade level in reading. Putting high interest, quality books into their hands is crucial in changing their abilities and perceptions.

High school students who are not reading on grade level are at greater risk for dropping out.

Through the use of audio books, books groups, and non fiction articles, students will work daily on increasing reading comprehension and fluency. These materials will allow for easier access to the books they want to read.

Student choice is one the most important factors when it comes to increasing reading motivation and interest. The books I have selected are high interest and are relevant to their lives. High school kids who are reading on a 4th-5th grade reading level don't want to read 4th and 5th grade books. The Kindle Fires will allow the use of Audible, which will allow them to read the same books as their peers via audio. For certain books, I have ordered sets of 3 and 4. Students will participate in small group book clubs of their choosing. The subscription to Upfront magazine will allow for whole group instruction of reading strategies using non fiction texts.
