My Project

I am excited to request funding for a classroom set of Anne Applebaum’s Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism. This book will provide my high school U.S. History students with an invaluable opportunity to critically examine the rise of authoritarianism in the modern world. As we study democracy's roots and challenges in our country’s history, Applebaum’s insights into the allure of authoritarian regimes will help students connect historical patterns with contemporary global events. By analyzing the factors that contribute to the erosion of democratic values, students will develop a deeper understanding of the fragility of freedom and the importance of civic engagement.

My primary goal is to foster critical thinking and informed discussion around the risks democracies face today.

Applebaum’s exploration of how democracies can slide into authoritarianism will encourage students to ask critical questions about power, political polarization, and the role of citizens in safeguarding democratic systems. I want my students to leave the classroom not only with knowledge of history but also with the tools to be active, informed participants in our democracy, able to recognize the signs of authoritarianism and act to protect the values we cherish.

What makes my students special is their curiosity and concern for the world around them. They are thoughtful, engaged, and eager to understand the complexities of political systems. They ask tough questions about the state of democracy, both in the U.S. and globally, and want to know how they can make a difference. Applebaum’s book will challenge them to think critically, develop empathy for diverse political contexts, and become thoughtful leaders who understand the importance of safeguarding democratic principles.
